Summary of Conference
Date: 28th - 30th January 2010
Venue: Orchard Hotel, Singapore

GSTC-SATTECH 2010, Space and Satellite Mega Event was successfully held in Orchard Hotel, Singapore from 28th to 30th January 2010. GSTC-SATTECH 2010 officially ended on 30th Jan 2010 with a special half day event for the Youth of Singapore who got to interact with prominent speakers across the region.

The event brought together about 200 delegates including regional and international decision makers, operation managers, end users, technologists and procurement specialists in the industry.

GSTC-SATTECH 2010 was organized by DTC Conferences (DTC) and Singapore Space & Technology Association (SSTA). It was officially launched at the Paris Airshow on 16th June 2009 and endorsed by the Economic Development Board of Singapore and Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore. The event is supported by the National University of Singapore's Centre for Remote Imaging, Sensing & Processing (CRISP), Nanyang Technological University of Singapore's Centre for Research in Satellite Technologies (CREST), Association of Aerospace Industries (Singapore), Asia-Pacific Satellite Communications Council (APSCC), Futron Corporation and Singapore Tourism Board (STB).

The Guest-of-Honour for GSTC-SATTECH 2010 was Mr S Iswaran, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Trade & Industry and Ministry of Education, Singapore. The event started with a keynote address by the Guest-of-Honour. In his Opening Keynote Address for GSTC-SATTECH 2010, Mr Iswaran pointed out the vast economic potential of Space and Asia's aspiration to play a strategic role. He further mentioned that Singapore with its strong Aerospace, Precision Engineering and Electronics ecosystems can play a key role in rapidly developing Space Industry in Asia.

For Day 1, there were keynote addresses by Mr Masakazu Toyoda, Secretary General of Strategic Headquarters for Space Policy, Cabinet Secretariat, Japan Strategic Headquarters for Space Policy; and Mr Jim Simon, Chief Strategist, Worldwide Public Sector, The Microsoft Corporation and Member of the Board of Directors for GeoEye. The delegates were then given a short break for Coffee and strategic Networking.

The short tea break for day 1 was followed by an Executive Dialogue on Commercialisation of Space, Chaired by Mr Joseph Fuller, Jr, President, Futron Corporation. The distinguished panelists included Major Gen (Res) Prof Isaac Ben-Israel, Chairman, Israel Space Agency; Mr Todd May, Special Assistant to the Director, Marshall Spaceflight Centre, NASA; Mr Masakazu Toyoda, Secretary General, Secretariat of Strategic Headquarters for Space Policy, Japan; and Mr Massimo Di Lazzarro, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Thales AleniaSpace. Their topic of discussion centered on strategic initiatives, directions and challenges facing the global space economy today.

The Executive Dialogue was immediately followed by Lunch and some time for networking among the delegates. Post Lunch, the Defence and Security Track saw interesting presentations from Mr Harold Raveche, President, Stevens Institute of Technology; Prof Chaim Eshed, Head of Space Programs, Israeli MOD; COL Martin France, Head of Astronautics Department, US Airforce Academy; Mr Julien Veyssiere from Thales Land & Joint Systems Division; Mr John Stuart, Vice President, Business Development from COM DEV Ltd; and Mr Olivier Pronier Business Manager, Maritime & Coastal Applications, Spot Image SA. The papers presented varied between tbe Grand Challenges of Space, Micro Satellite and Small Satellites, Learning Space, Military Satellite Communications, Satellite Tracking of Ships and Maritime Surveillance - Combining Optical and SAR Observations.

This highly successful Track was followed after a short tea break by the 2nd Dialogue of the event - Industry Dialogue - Satellite Initiatives, Risk Management & Project Funding and it was chaired by Mr Joerg Kreisel, CEO of JOERG KREISEL International Consultants. The Distinguished panelists included Ms Lynda Weatherman, President and CEO, Spacecoast Economic Development Commission; Mr Simon Davies, Senior Vice President, Space Projects London, Marsh Ltd; and Mr Francesco Passaretta, Senior Manager, SE Asia, India & Australia, Observation, Science Dual Use SAR Satellite Systems, ThalesAleniaSpace. After this Industry Dialogue, the first day of GSTC-SATTECH 2010 came to an end.

VIPs were hosted to a VIP Cocktail at the Marina Mandarin Pool Garden, through the courtesy of Dassault Systemes Singapore Pte Ltd.

Day 2 of GSTC-SATTECH 2010 started at 9am on 29th January 2010 with a keynote address delivered by Mr Richard Bowles, Director, Singapore Asean Office, Arianespace on behalf of Mr Jacques Breton, Senior Vice President, Arianespace. This was followed by a 2nd keynote address by Mr Massimo Di Lazzarro, Senior Vice President & General Manager, ThalesAleniaSpace on Maritime Safety & Security - The Space Contribution. The first half of the morning ended with a featured address on Currency & Speed are the New Requirements for Satellite Imagery by Ms Jill Smith, Chief Executive Officer, DigitalGlobe.

After a networking coffee break, the session resumed with a Regional Dialogue on Initiatives and Roadmaps, started with Mr Kwoh Leong Keong, Director, Center for Remote Imaging, Sensing and Processing (CRISP), University of Singapore as the Session Chair. The distinguished regional panelists were Mr Susumu Sambommatsu, President, Institute of Unmanned Space Experiment Free Flyer (USEF - Japan); Dr Pham Anh Tuan, Vice Director, Vietnam Space Technology Institute (Vietnam); Mr Ratan Shrivastava, Director, Aerospace & Defence Practice, South Asia & Middle East - Frost & Sullivan (India); and Dr Chanchai Peanvijarnpong, Deputy Director, Geo-Informatics & Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA - Thailand). This lively Dialogue was immediately followed by Lunch hosted by DigitalGlobe and an opportunity for the delegates to network again.

DigitalGlobe Lunch was followed by the Space Technologies Track. The Track started with Mr Richard Bowles from Arianespace talking about Access to Space for Small Satellites. This was followed by Mr Hiroyuki Inahata, Head of Space Business, General Manager Space Systems Division, Mitsubishi Electric (MELCO) talking about Earth Observation Satellite Technology and Contribution to the Asia Pacific Region. Dr Gabby Sarusi, Vice President and CTO of ELOP presented the next paper on Space Electro-Optic Payloads at ELOP - Past and Future. Mr Guy Limouzin, Business Development Director - Asia, EADS Astrium next delivered his paper on Earth Observation Satellites for the World. The Space Technologies Track closed with a paper from Mr Ruy Pinto, Vice President - Satellite & Network Operations from Inmarsat PLC on Mobile Satellite Communications - A Moving Target.

The last session for Day 2 - Emerging Satellite Based Applications started with a paper on Earth Observation Applications and Missions by Mr Gunter Schreier, Head Business Development and GMES, DLR German Space Agency. This was followed by Mr Andrea Celentano, Key Account Manager, COSMO-SkyMed Commercialization Group, E-Geos who talked about COSMO-SkyMed in Challenging Environments. The Third paper of this long day was delivered by Mr Philippe Campenon, Deputy Commercial Director, Spot Image SA on Pleiades Satellites : 1st Satellite of the Constellation due for Launch in 2010. Prof Dr Hans Martin Braun, Director General, RST Radar Systemtechnik Gmbh talked about A New SAR for a uSAT Platform and the day ended with the final paper by Dr Dieter Birreck, Director, Satellite Based Reconnaissance, OHB-Systems AG on the topic of CarbonSat Constellation.

Day Two ended with a Chinese Dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel, specially arranged for sponsors who were taught the traditional way of eating Yusheng to start off an enjoyable evening.

The final day of GSTC-SATTECH 2010 was dedicated to Commercial Space Transportation and the Knowledge & Interest-based Session for the Students and Space and Satellite enthusiasts. The half-day session was started off by Mr Joseph Fuller, President of Futron Corporation. This was followed by presentations by Ms Lynda Weatherman, President & CEO, Spacecoast Economic Development Commission; Mr Hugues Laporte - Weywada, Senior Vice President, EADS Astrium who talked about Astrium Suborbital Spaceplane and finally, Mr Joerg Kreisel, Chief Executive Officer of JOERG KREISEL International Consultant. The successful event ended with an interesting Question and Answer Session from the enthusiastic audience and the event ended at with a light reception for all.

In all, the three day event saw a total of about 200 delegates from countries ranging from Europe, US and the Asian Region. GSTC-SATTECH 2010 facilitated the participation from European Space Agency, NASA, GISTDA (Thailand), Vietnam Space and Technology Institute, Israel Space Agency and Japan Strategic Headquarters for Space Policy. The organizers will be building up on the success of this event to a bigger and better event in 2011.
