DTC Defence Events 2013
Event Summary

Defence Technology Asia (DTA) 2013 was the 11th Edition of the highly successful Naval Domain Event. In DTA 2013, DTC Conferences not only brought into focus the key traditional elements of the Naval Domain in Asia – Submarine And Anti Submarine Warfare, Unmanned Systems and Naval Surface Ships but also explored Naval Logistics and Air Domain (Helos & UMH).

DTA 2013 designed under the theme Technology - The Force Differentiator aimed at bringing leading defence organisations and their domain experts in face to face interactions with regional navies and their decision makers to discuss naval technology innovations and facilitate better understanding of the needs of the Navies in the region.

DTA 2013 featured a technology showcase with TKMS, ELT and WASS. Table space for interaction and networking were taken by Luerssen and SAAB.

DTA 2013 Grand Opening Ceremony’s first Keynote address at 9.20am was delivered by RADM Stefano Dotti, Head of Studies & Project Department, Italian Navy General Staff at the Four Seasons Hotel Ballroom (the venue of the event).
In Admiral Dotti’s keynote , he shared the Italian Authorities’ experience in several large scale naval programmes , with a particular focus on FREMM. He elaborated on the need to find a delicate balance between the demands of modern navies and the commercial drivers of the industry.

The second Keynote address The cost of technology and the crew's ability to use the submarine- is there a perfect match? was presented by CAPT (N) Fredrik Norrby Head of Submarine Flottila of the Swedish Navy.

In CAPT Norrby’s address , he touched on the role of training within the context of best technology’s that are sourced and deployed by modern navies. He elaborated that training of the crew would be a vital consideration in ensuring that the technologies achieve their best performance in operations.

After a brief coffee break, RADM Jonas Haggren, Head of Navy Training and Procurement Directorate of the Swedish Navy chaired the Senior Executive Dialogue on the topic, When 'good enough' is better than 'best' . The distinguished panel included RADM Stefano Dotti, CAPT (N) Fredrik Norrby and CAPT (R) Nigel Chandler, Head of UK Business Development, Astrium. A very lively question and answer session followed the dialogue.

The lunch for the first day of DTA 2013 was hosted by MTU at the Four Seasons Ballroom A from 12pm to 1pm.

The post-lunch track, Naval Surface Ships - C³ and Weapons’ Session Chair was Mr Lim Soon Tein, vice-president of Operations at ST-ISS. Papers were presented by EADS Astrium Elettronica S.p.A. and MBDA. 

During this session , CAPT ( R) Nigel Chandler delivered his featured paper outlining the role of Military Satcom at the heart of Maritime Information Superiority. Using recent examples from the Middle East Region ( CTF 151 ) ,he put out a bold vision for evolution vs revolution in response to future maritime communication demands. A coffee break cum networking session from 2pm to 2.20pm followed the presentations.

Unmanned Vehicles was the theme of the next session track that began at 2.20pm. It was chaired by Mr Ng Tee Guan, VP of Business development at ST Electronics. A total of six papers were presented. Two papers were presented by Thales, two by SAAB and one each by Kockums AB/ThyssenKrupp and Elettronica S.p.A.
Day 1 also included a Helicopter Technology workshop by Agusta Westland
The VIP Cocktail for DTA 2013 was held at the Mint Museum of Toys @ Seah Street from 7 pm to 11 pm. The event was attended by 120 invited international and local dignitaries. The attendees enjoyed this wonderful atmosphere right in the heart of Singapore’s Business District and took the opportunity to enjoy the networking opportunity that the VIP Cocktail provided.

The second day of DTA 2013 began with registration at 8.30am. The first Featured Paper, Satellite Imaging Radar for Naval Domain – Status and Outlook was presented by Prof. Hans Martin Braun of RST at 9am in Crescent Ballroom A. The art of Naval Ship Design and Construction by Mr. Detlef Schlichting of Luerssen was the second Featured Paper at 9.30am. The delegates then took a coffee break and networked from 10am to 10.20am. 

Following the coffee break two parallel tracks began in adjacent ballrooms at 10.20am. Crescent Ballroom A was the venue for the topic, Naval Surface Ships – Sonar chaired by Dr Claudio Ceccarini, Head of WASS Singapore Branch. Four papers were presented in this track by domain experts from Whitehead Sistemi Subacquei, S.P.A., Thales and Selex ES. At the same time in Crescent Ballroom B, the Air Domain (Helos & UMH) session proceeded with papers from AgustaWestland, Thales and Selex ES.

After lunch from 11.40 to 12.40, delegates re-convened for 2 parallel tracks. Naval Surface Ships - Platform Design/Naval Logistics in Crescent Ballroom A was chaired by Mr Ola Gullberg. Papers in this track were presented by TenCate Advanced Armour APAC, Rolls Royce, Germanischer Lloyd and Steria/Intelledox. The parallel track, Submarine & Anti-Submarine Warfare-Design was chaired by Mr Håkan L Ahlströmin Crescent Ballroom B. ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, Kockums AB/ThyssenKrupp and Selex ES presented papers in this track.

The coffee break from 2pm to 2.40pm presented further networking opportunities after which the final 2 tracks of the conference began. Submarine & Anti-Submarine Warfare – Power in Crescent Ballroom A was chaired by Mr Lars Rönnquist. Papers in this track were presented by Whitehead Sistemi Subaquei S.P.A., SAFT Batteries and ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. Mr Lam Yen Chin chaired the parallel track on Naval Surface Ships – Sensors in Crescent Ballroom B. Thales and Elettronica S.p.A presented their papers in this track. 

DTA Conference and Exhibition 2013 ended at 4pm on 21 February 2013. Over the two days, a total of 270 delegates attended the events. The delegates were from the Republic of Singapore Navy, Defence Science & Technology Agency, DSO National Laboratories, Defence Research & Technology Office, Ministry of Defence Singapore, France, Germany, Italy, Malaysia, Sweden, Denmark, Canada, United States and other parts of the world.
DTA 2013 saw key International delegations from Swedish Defence and Security Export Agency (FXM), Swedish Navy and the Italian Navy.

A total of 36 papers were presented and one major dialogue session was conducted during DTA 2013.

A total of 25 international and regional Naval Domain and Defence companies participated in DTA 2013: ST-LSS, Finmeccanica, MBDA, TenCate, Agusta Westland , FXM, MTU Asia, Jurong SML, Luerssen, EADs - Astrium, Elettronica SpA, , Germanischer Lloyd, MBDA, Rolls Royce, RST , SAAB ( Underwater) , SAFT , Selex ES, Steria , Thales Solutions Asia, Thales Nederland, Thales Defence Missions Systems, Thales Underwater Systems, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, Kockums AB (ThyssenKrupp) and Whitehead Sistemi Subacquei S.P.A. (WASS).
