DTA-NTS 2009 - Summary of Conference

Defence Technology Asia - Naval Technology Seminar (DTA-NTS) 2009 organised by Defence Technology Conference ( DTC ) is a combination of Defence Technology Asia ( DTA ) Conference series which has been organized by DTC since 2003 and Naval Platform Technology Seminar ( NPTS ) which has been organized by Republic of Singapore Navy since 1992. DTA - NTS 2009 designed under the theme "Technology - The Force Differentiator" aimed to bring leading Defence Organisations and their domain experts in face to face interactions with regional navies and their decision makers to discuss naval technology innovations and facilitate better understanding of the needs of the Navies in the region.

The Guest-of-Honour for DTA -NTS 2009 was Dr Tan Kim Siew, Permanent Secretary (Defence Development), Ministry of Defence, Singapore. The keynote addresses for DTA-NTS 2009 were delivered by RADM Chew Men Leong, Chief of Navy, Republic of Singapore, VADM Raman Prem Suthan, Vice Chief of Navy, Indian Navy and RADM Onofrio Flagiello, Chief Research and Technology and National Research Planning, Ministry of Defence, Italy.

After a brief break, the featured speakers of DTA-NTS that included Mr Jonathan Kammerman, Managing Director, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems International, gave their speeches to the distinguished guests and delegates of the event.

Distinguished Participants at DTA-NTS included the Ambassadors to Singapore from Germany, Italy and Ukraine and International delegates at the event included participants from India, Malaysia, Vietnam, Korea, France, Italy, Russia, Ukraine and United States. The Republic of Singapore Navy, Defence Science & Technology Agency, DSO National Laboratories and the Ministry of Defence were represented by delegates from operations, technologists, program managers and senior personnel involved in Naval Technology and its usage and acquisition.

After Lunch, the Conference broke up into its various sub topics namely Submarine & Anti-Submarine Warfare (SASW), Naval Surface Ships (NAVSA) and Unmanned Vehicles and Systems (UVSA). The SASW track saw detailed presentations on Platform Technologies, Underwater Weapons and Systems, Sonars and Sensors. The NAVSA session handled topics like Advanced Surface Platforms, Platforms and Simulations, Missile Defence Systems, and Sensors & Electronic Warfare. The very popular Unmanned Vehicles and Systems track saw discussions in the areas of Platforms and Technologies, Weapon and Control Systems, Platforms and Combat Systems. In all the conference saw a total of over 35 papers being presented by leading technologists in the world.

Naval Technology Industry participation in this year's DTA - NTS 2009 came from GL, Lockheed Martin, Thales, Finmeccanica Group - Elettronica, Oto Melara, WASS, Selex, Selex Galileo, Eurotorp, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems - Blohm + Voss Shipyards, Kockums, DCNS, L3 Communications, Automatic Sea Vision, ECA, IAI, MTU, SAFT, SAAB, ST Electronics and ST Marine, Reson & Sea and Land Technologies.

Our media partners Naval Forces, Jane's, Asian Defence & Diplomacy and the Asian Defence Journal were represented at the event.

A very successful networking reception for 120 invited delegates and participants from DTA-NTS 2009 was organized on the evening of 4th Mar 2009 at the Garden poolside of Marina Mandarin, Singapore. In the peaceful setting beside the calm waters of the Marina Mandarin pool, the delegates and the participants spent the evening in a social setting catching up with old friends and meeting new members of the international Naval Technology community.

Feedback from participants indicated that DTA - NTS 2009 has impressed them with its ability to build on the tradition of two events to providing an excellent forum for the strategic presentation and discussion of the latest naval technology advances and its relevance to the Asian region by acknowledged international experts. DTA-NTS 2009 has also impressed suppliers and end-users with its numerous networking opportunities. In all, a total of 500 delegates attended the two day conference.

Given the success of DTA-NTS 2009, Defence Directory Conferences (DTC) is confident of continuing its tradition of providing another excellent and unique forum of conferences and exhibition in Defence Technology Asia 2010.
