2008 - Summary of Conference & Exhibition
Venue: Raffles Hotel, Singapore
Asia 2008 International Conferences and Exhibition (DTA 2008),
the sixth in the series organized by Defence Technology Conferences,
was held on 22nd - 23rd May 2008 at the Raffles Hotel , Singapore.
These unique events enabled key regional decision makers and
experts from government, military, defence industries and academia
to be updated on the latest technological developments and systems
which are suitable for a wide range of operations in the region.
The Guest-of-Honour for DTA 2008, RADM Chew Men Leong, Chief
of Navy, Republic of Singapore Navy, launched DTA 2008 with
the opening keynote address.
In this Keynote address , RADM Chew discussed the role of technology
as a catalyst for Naval Warfare evolution. The address gave
an insight into RSN transformation from 1967 to today's 3rd
Generation RSN. In his address , he emphasized the technologies
that has been deployed by RSN over the years and gave an interesting
glimpse into what the future holds.
Other government and military officials who delivered keynote
speeches at DTA 2008 were:
VADM Dino Nascetti, Director General, Italian Naval Armament
Authority (NAVARM), Italian Navy;
Dr Sukru Besiktepe ,Modeling and Prediction Group Director,
Representing NATO Undersea Research Centre, NATO;
CAPT Jonas Haggren, Commander 1st Flotilla , Royal Swedish Navy
Distinguished Participants at DTA 2008 included ADM Prawit Srisukwattana
, Commander in Chief , Royal Thai Fleet , and His Chief of Staff,
His Excellency Par Ingemar Ahlberger , Ambassador , Embassy
of Sweden among the regional and international delegate list.
Key Industry leaders also attended the two day Conference. This
included Managing Directors, worldwide Sales and Marketing Vice-Presidents,
and Directors from:- Eurotorp, DCNS, Finmeccanicca, Kokums AB,
L3, MTU, SAGEM, SELEX SYSTEMI INTEGRATI, ST Electronics, THALES,
ULTRA and WASS.
The keynote speakers discussed the operational and technological
developments in their respective countries. Their speeches were
based on their appreciation of strategic and operational situations
and threats, with a focus on specific projects and programmes
in their individual organisations The role of technology and
its strategic usage in these organisations was very clearly
emphasized by the distinguished speakers..
The operational and technological aspects were presented in
greater detail at the two conferences which were held concurrently
during DTA 2008. The three conferences were: Submarine and ASW
Asia 2008, Naval Surface Ships Asia 2008, Maritime & Naval
Domain Asia 2008 and Unmanned Vehicles & Systems Asia 2008.
These conferences were complemented by an exhibition, which
enabled the participating defence companies to showcase their
latest technological developments. The Exhibition was opened
by RADM Tan Kai Hoe , Chief of Staff ( Naval Staff ) , Republic
of Singapore Navy . 15 leading defence organisations from Europe
and US participated in the Exhibition.
There was a steady stream of visitors to the exhibition, which
was open throughout DTA 2008.. The exhibition provided exhibitors
and regional and local visitors the opportunity to discuss the
latest technology and facilitated strategic networking .
Detailed discussions between defence companies and potential
customers on the developments in technology and its ability
to meet end-user requirements were also conducted on the sidelines
of DTA 2008.
A very successful networking reception for 120 delegates and
participants from DTA 2008 was organized on the evening of 22
nd May 2008 at the poolside of Conrad Hotel . In the peaceful
setting beside the calm waters of the Conrad Hotel pool , the
delegates and the participants spent the evening in a social
setting with the String Quartet providing light semi classical
music that set the overall mood of the evening against a brilliant
Feedback from participants indicated that Defence Technology
Asia 2008 has impressed them with its ability to build on its
tradition of providing an excellent forum for the strategic
presentation and discussion of the latest defence technology
advances and its relevance to the Asian region by acknowledged
international experts. DTA 2008 has also impressed suppliers
and end-users with its numerous networking opportunities. In
all a total of 220 delegates attended this two day conference.
Given the success of DTA 2008, Defence Directory Conferences
is confident of continuing its tradition of providing another
excellent and unique forum of conferences and exhibition in
Defence Technology Asia 2009.
